Torshavn

Torshavn, located on Streymoy Peninsula, is the official capital of the Faroese Islands. It is well-known for its old town, Tonganshellir, crowded with old wooden roof-roofed huts on a narrow peninsula, near a harbor that is bordered by steep cliffs.

To the east, to the north-west is Tinganes Cathedral, restored in the 19th Century. In this town you can see the ruins of a former church called Stolbudal and the Old Town Hall. North of the town is the Norðmenn House, an historic building, which has served as the residence of the king of Denmark. To the south-west is the town museum, where you will find a museum that tells the history of Torshavn, the islands and the settlement of Streymoy.

In the northeast part of the town is the Streymoy Botanic Garden, with a beautiful setting of tall trees and the small, blue islands. The northernmost part is home to the Norðmenn Museum, where you will find art works and manuscripts from the 13th century. The Norðmenn Folk Museum tells about local traditions of Torshavn. In the center of the town is the town hall, with a statue of the Norwegian king Sigurd; it was built in 1713.

In the western part of the island, near Tinganes' bay, is another historic place, that can be visited. It is called Stokkastallag, or the oldest public market in Torshavn. Here you will find stalls selling traditional Faroese food like rye, sourdough and cheese. Other stalls sell handicrafts, pottery, glassware, jewelry and clothing. There are also many restaurants serving traditional Faroese meals, including bread, beer, soup, fish and meat.

The market area is separated into two parts: the north-east section of the market has stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables; the north-west part has stalls selling local handicrafts. Torshavn is a popular shopping destination for tourists visiting the island. It is an important place to visit for Faroese tourists as many local products are imported from Iceland and sold here.

A boat trip takes travelers to the island of Torshavn, a few hours by car to the north-east part of the island; then they take the ferry to the western part of the island and a trip to the east, which connects to Streymoy. For people who want to enjoy more relaxation, there are also many cruises available; all boats start in the western port.

Many of the shops in Tinganes have a small cafe on board, where you can enjoy your breakfast while watching the people pass by on the docks. You can also try your local Faroese dishes in the restaurants.

The main attractions in Tinganes are the Stokkastallag, the old church, the town hall and the Norðmenn Museum. Tourists can see the sea gulls that feed on the seaweed in the bay. There are also a small hotel and guest house on the island. Torshavn is an easy and enjoyable place to stay during your visit, with great accommodation facilities, if you plan ahead.
